The best places to get a donut in Dublin
I’m literally obsessed with donuts much more than how I am with Italian cornetti, for example; in Rome we have what we call “ciambelle fritte” which are similar to donuts but fluffier and never filled. We also have the bomboloni, filled with cream or chocolate and dusted with sugar. That’s probably why I love donuts so much: they make me happy and their endless opportunities when it comes to fillings are another reason to be happy. When I moved to Dublin years ago I was always looking for something similar to bomboloni and ciambelle but the donuts weren’t a thing so you could buy one of them only at the supermarket. They were absolutely unappealing and unhealthy so I’ve always avoid to buy them and eventually make at home. Then, something has changed and Dublin got obsessed by donuts in the same way I am.
Today quality donuts are easy to find across Dublin, Dubliners and people like me got crazy and a lot of new gourmet donuts shops have opened around the city making this the trend to watch. Here the best places for a donut in Dublin. Well, even more than one if you like…
Originally Located on O’Connell Street, The Rolling Donut was established in 1978. Today they’ve a shop near O’Connell Bridge as well where they serve tons of different donuts with different filling every day. The cinnamon sugared donuts are simply to die for.
On top of Aungier Street, this eatery bakes decadent donuts each day. They also bake special donuts for special occasions (the famous donuts cone, for example). Interesting fact: once the donuts are all gone the shop closes for the day. No wonder why there’s always a big queue outside, no matter the weather.
Not a shop but a supplier for a few eateries and cafes around Dublin, the Dublin Doughnut Co. Flavours change every week but some of them are already a classic, for example the honeycomb and the Oreo ones. Vice Coffee in Middle Abbey St is probably the biggest seller.
Located at Pearse Street DART station, Offbeat Donuts is a small shop where donuts are baked fresh every day directly on site and directly in front of the customers. Tons of flavours and great deals if you buy more than one (you definitely should!). The creamy filled Red Velvet is just spectacular.
Stand up for these guys and their ideas of donuts: handcrafted using natural ingredients and slow fermented (20 days). The results is simply amazing and the fact that there are no addictives or preservatives involved is a warranty of success. Based in Blackrock Market, they supply donuts all over the city. The white chocolate, tiramisù and cherry donut is a must try together with the salted caramel and peanut chocolate one. 3fe is one of their most famous reseller.
